The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, is a book about a young boy that yearns to travel the world. When Santiago was younger he grew enough courage to confront his father about his wishes to not be a priest, but to travel. Despite his fathers attempt to convince him to stay, he decided to become a shepherd and lead his herd to visit the “…castles in the towns where they live” (Coelho 9). This shows that he has an adventurous spirit and doesn’t want to settle in one place forever. His father gave him his blessing and advised him to “Take to the fields, and someday you’ll learn that our countryside is the best, and our women are the most beautiful.” (Coelho 9). After two years of traveling, he developed a close relationship with his sheep. Santiago had read his herd bedtime stories and their schedules were in sync “He had noticed that, as soon as he awoke, most of his animals also begin to stir.” (Coelho 4). Since they had been together for a prolonged amount of time, they grew with each other and adapted to each others schedules. It displays that he is affectionate with his sheep and will protect them at all costs. Within those past few days, all he could think about is the girl he met in a village that he would soon visit. A year before, he met the girl in search of selling wool to a merchant. As he waited, the girl started talking to him and “He recognized that he was feeling something he had never experienced before: the desire to live in one place forever.” (Coelho 6). The fact that he has never experience this desired feeling shows that he must care deeply for girl. In these few pages it demonstrates how Santiago let free and started to adventure but still managed to grow feelings for others. Santiago’s personality is obviously displayed within the few pages we read. Although his appearance is not described, you can easily see his personality shows how he’s innocent, kind, caring, dependable, and driven.
